What is NME or Non medical Expenditure?

The IRDAI has excluded the costs of some products you might purchase while in the hospital in order to prevent the abuse of health insurance. These costs are referred to as non-medical charges, and insurance companies are not obligated to pay the same throughout the claim settlement process.

In order to prevent unpleasant surprises when it comes to settling claims, the IRDAI has outlined some non-medical charges that you should be aware of. Which are:
  1. In-room charges: such as toothpaste, hand wash, tissue paper, gown, slippers etc.
  2. Medical consumablessurgical blades, instruments, gauze, cotton & bandages, apron, arthroscopy and endoscopy instrument charges, disposable razors, eye pad, medicine box, needles, syringes, injections, washing charges, digestion gels, paper gloves etc.
  3. Procedure-related exceptionsDuring hospitalisation, there are some expenses as part of treatment which cannot be claimed, such as admission/registration charges, blood reservation charges, antiseptic mouthwash, dietician & nutrition planning charges, spirit, disinfectant, hydrogen peroxide, urine container, vaccination charges, infusion pump charges
The non-medical costs are typically manageable and can be covered out of pocket. For a quick settlement, it's crucial to be aware of your health insurance plans' exclusions and to refrain from submitting claims for non-medical products.
